The constraint

Gloss protected from the mill to the nozzle.

Coatings filtration has an inherent conflict: remove agglomerates and gel particles while leaving the pigment dispersion untouched. Too fine a filter strips colour strength; too coarse and defects reach the substrate.

Pigment retention

The filter must pass dispersed pigment while capturing agglomerates only marginally larger — a narrow, deliberate cut-point.

Viscosity and pressure budget

High-viscosity coatings generate large pressure drops that must be carried within the available pump head.

Shear sensitivity

Excessive shear breaks emulsions and flocculates dispersions, so velocity through the media matters as much as rating.

Colour changeover

Complete drainability and rapid clean-down determine how many colours a line can run per shift.
