The constraint

Separation that holds through sour service and sand.

Hydrocarbon service punishes filtration in three directions at once: H₂S attacks the metallurgy, sand arrives without warning at full line velocity, and produced water chemistry shifts as the field ages. Equipment specified for day-one conditions is often obsolete by year three.

Sour service metallurgy

H₂S partial pressure drives hardness limits, PWHT requirements and alloy selection under NACE MR0175 — decisions that cannot be reversed after fabrication.

Unpredictable sand loading

A sand slug at line velocity will collapse an under-designed basket into the pump. Structural rating matters more than filtration rating on this duty.

Amine and glycol carryover

Sub-micron aerosol losses are a direct chemical cost and a downstream fouling mechanism that gauges never reveal.

Water chemistry that drifts

Water cut, chloride content and scaling tendency all change as a field matures, so filtration must be specified against the field's tenth year, not its first.
